Nepal Expedition 2024

Ampleforth College will conduct its next Nepal expedition in October 2024.  This will follow on from the highly successful expeditions in 2014, 17, 19 and 22.

The aim of the trip is to introduce Ampleforth College students to the beauty of Nepal and its people, culture and language, by trekking through the Himalayan foothills to our link school in Gilung village, Lamjung district in order to assist in the completion of a sponsored welfare project.

Other than approx 2-3 days which will be used as sightseeing in the capital, the team will trek in the area North East of Besi Sahar in the Lamjung district of Nepal (within the Annapurna National Park).

Participants will raise money to assist in the development of a welfare project for Gilung Village and secondary school.  Further details will be confirmed after consultation between the Gilung community and The Pahar Trust (TPT). The money raised will be transferred to TPT, a recognised Anglo-Nepali educational based charity (charity number UK 1028469).  Further details about TPT can be found here: www.pahar-trust.org. All students who sign up for the expedition will be expected to raise money through sponsored events, cake sales, car washing days, etc. Over the last six years, Ampleforth College has raised over £15,000 for the area we visit and this trip we hope to raise about £7,500 which means each student raising approximately £450 each.  This is a lot of money and therefore early engagement and a proactive approach to fundraising with parental support is essential.  The flagship fundraising event will be the ‘Nepal Hill Race’ at Exhibition on Sat 25 May.  Students and staff will conduct a short hill run with packs to replicate the conditions in which Nepali people carry their possessions.

Dr Brendan Anglim will lead the expedition on behalf of the College and True Adventure.  He is Mountain Leader and First Aid qualified, has previous experience of leading expeditions in the UK and has been a member of staff on the last two Nepal expeditions.
