Service

Serve those who are weak or in need, for in serving others you serve Christ himself.

Rule of St. Benedict

Service is a core tenet of life at Ampleforth. Pupils are encouraged to learn about what they can do for others and the positive contribution and impact they can make to the school and wider community. Junior pupils help with gardening on the school estate, learning to embody the Benedictine value of hospitality by serving at Mass and helping clear up all the parents’ and visitors’ coffee afterwards. They also regularly visit the parish church in Ampleforth to run the children’s liturgy on Sundays.

You will see there are several quotes from the Rule of St Benedict on this website The Rule was written in the Sixth Century for monks as a practical guide to living the Christian message and lies at the foundation of Christian life in this country. Although very old, it has timeless lessons to share and is perhaps even more relevant in today’s world which can be particularly challenging for young people.

The Rule provides a guide to how individuals with different personalities, interests, and characteristics can all live together harmoniously. The principles of being welcoming to all, providing for each other's needs, and caring for each other teach the value of inclusion, empathy, and kindness towards others.

At Ampleforth, the Rule is at the heart of all that we do and cultivates a very warm and nurturing community focused on supporting personal growth. This could not be a better place to grow up, learn how to contribute positively to the world, and to become the best version of yourself.
