St Lawrence Lecture: Faith Under Fire: Religious Freedom and Human Dignity in Occupied Ukraine.

On Sunday, Ampleforth College was privileged to welcome Oleksandra Matviichuk, Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, human rights lawyer and Head of the Centre for Civil Liberties, to deliver this term's St Laurence Lecture, Faith Under Fire: Religious Freedom and Human Dignity in Occupied Ukraine.
Drawing on her extraordinary work documenting war crimes and human rights abuses in Ukraine, Oleksandra shared deeply moving accounts of the individuals and communities affected by Russia's invasion and occupation. Through their stories, she brought home the human cost of war, the persecution of religious communities, and the courage of those who continue to defend human dignity, freedom and justice.
She was joined by Old Amplefordian Harry Blakiston Houston, founder of Insulate Ukraine, and Alexi Guedroitz, whose work supporting communities affected by the war offered a powerful example of compassion and conviction translated into practical action.
Together, their reflections and the questions that followed challenged us to consider the role of faith and community in times of persecution and our shared responsibility to uphold the dignity of every human being.
It was an immensely moving and thought-provoking occasion, reminding us that behind every account of conflict and suffering are real people, whose lives and stories must never be forgotten. Our sincere thanks to Oleksandra, Harry and Alexi for their generosity, courage and witness, and to the many pupils, parents, staff, Old Amplefordians and members of the wider community who joined us.
