Day pupils make up 18% of the school. They join a boarding house and become a part of that community in the same way as their house siblings who board. They arrive early in the morning, often joining in House breakfast, and are welcome to stay at school until late in the evening, which means they can do prep and participate in activities with the boarders.
New day pupils are encouraged to board on an extended taster - free of charge - for the first three weeks of the Autumn Term so they have a chance to become familiar with all aspects of life at school and be fully integrated into the house community.
With the huge range of after-school activities on offer, we recognise that having the option to board for occasional nights can be of great help and convenience. By arranging this with their Houseparent, for which there is a nightly charge, our day pupils can cater this around their own schedule.
Ampleforth is a full boarding school, with a vibrant and busy atmosphere throughout the school term. This includes weekends with morning lessons every Saturday followed by sports matches against other schools in the afternoon. There are social events for different year groups every Saturday night and, after Mass on Sunday morning, many opportunities for trips, activities and spending time with friends. For this reason we do not offer weekly boarding, as we believe it's important that our pupils are always surrounded by fellow boarders. Day pupils often come to school seven days a week.
Our minibus service collects and drops off our pupils at numerous local destinations. If you have a specific query or would like to find out more about our day pupil travel service, such as times, prices or routes, please contact our Admissions Team who will be happy to assist you.
