Co-curricular
We believe in the importance of achieving the right balance in life and encourage every pupil to make the most of the huge range of co-curricular activities and clubs at Ampleforth. Every Friday, the whole school stops lessons and takes part in activities all afternoon. This allows sufficient time to make real progress in an area of interest outside the classroom. Activities are also on offer daily after school. Depending on their age, pupils choose a minimum of 2 or 3 activities each week, and many are involved in lots more.
In addition to sports, music, drama and art activities, the opportunities are endless, from debating to karate, silver-smithing to chess, clay and game shooting to eco-engineering. We have a vehicle restoration group where pupils get hands-on experience bringing old cars back to life. There are all sorts of academic societies, from astronomy to politics, and a multitude of energetic activities from dance classes, archery, horse riding and kayaking. There is something for everyone. We also support a variety of community service projects for our Year 12 students on Friday afternoons where they help in local primary schools, charity shops, and care homes, or take part in a project to raise money and organise shared social activities with a school for children with special educational needs. Service is a core feature of life at Ampleforth.
