Arriving from the east, via Oswaldkirk village
From the main road, please take the first turning on your left signposted Ampleforth College. Follow the main signs to reach the entry barrier. Please press the buzzer and you will be connected to reception who will give you the code to open the barrier. Following the signs, keep driving onwards until you reach the Visitor Parking bays overlooking the Ampleforth valley. Reception is located in the large building with a glass tower, next to the Abbey Church. Access is via the main steps or ramp. On arrival at reception, you will be asked to complete the COVID-19 track and trace form.
Arriving from the west, via Ampleforth village
Drive past the entrance for Ampleforth Abbey and continue under the bridge, taking the next turning on your right signposted Ampleforth College. Follow the main signs to reach the entry barrier. Following the signs, keep driving onwards until you reach the Visitor Parking bays overlooking the Ampleforth valley. - From London, you can hop on a train and reach York within just two hours. From there, it’s less than an hour’s drive to reach us. If you’re traveling from Edinburgh, it’s just less than three hours on the train!
- Regular taxis are available from the main entrance of York train station. However, if you want to book ahead or arrange a taxi service for a later date, there a several local taxi companies available. Morse
Taxis and York Station Taxis offer special rates for all Ampleforth students, parents and guests. Use of these taxis in normally on an unescorted basis, however, should your child be at an age where escorted service is required, an“unaccompanied minor service” may be available by special request.

- Both Reliance and Transdev run buses from York to Ampleforth. Click here to find a handy list of all those journey times and bus routes.
- Flying into Heathrow or Gatwick airport, you’re then less than 3 hours away by train. However, there are a host of even closer airports one could fly to. Manchester airport is a two hour journey and most conveniently of all, Leeds Bradford, Robin Hood (Doncaster) and Newcastle airport are all within an hour to an hour and a half away. Manchester Airport’s integrated transport hub, offers fast and frequent train services, linking the airport with over 100 destinations across the North of England and beyond, including a direct link to York Station. Trains run every hour and the journey takes approximately 1hr 45 mins. Other airports, including Leeds/Bradford Airport and Teesside Airport are also nearby and although some are accessible by rail link, there may not be a direct service. The most suitable direct transfer to Leeds/Bradford or Teesside is by taxi.

Travel arrangements for our boarding students are planned and coordinated by Suzie Boam, who for over fifteen years has been responsible for the safe delivery of our traveling students.
