What a joy it was to join with so many families for Confirmation on Sunday. Marie and I congratulate all our students who received the sacrament of Confirmation from the Bishop of Middlesbrough, Rt Rev Terence Drainey - it was an uplifting and wonderful day for the Abbey and the College.
The tennis season continues apace with all our boys' teams and the U18A, U18B and U14A girls seeing victory over Giggleswick at the weekend. We were delighted to host our friends from the RA day charity and from the Lourdes Pilgrimage group for coffee in the Main Hall after Sunday Mass.
The tennis season got off to a great start with almost all our teams seeing wins against Hymers and Pocklington at the weekend - seeing the courts full and hearing the sound of racket on ball really does mark the start of the summer term!
Marie and I hope you all had a blessed Eastertide with your families. It's been lovely to welcome everyone back to the Valley and the Trinity Term is happily underway, the students and the staff focusing on studies and all the co-curricular opportunities in a responsive and pleasing way.
Harriet, Fr Ambrose and I returned from a very successful recruiting trip across Germany at the weekend reconnecting with old Ampleforth families and meeting many new ones.
Fierce competition in sport this week with the Inter-House Netball and Hockey - congratulations to St Margaret's and St Cuthbert's & St Thomas' for the Intermediates and to St Bede's and St Dunstan's & St Oswald's for the Seniors.
We welcomed 25 students and their parents for our Sixth Form Taster Lessons last Saturday - a fantastic way for them to experience Ampleforth education first-hand and help decide the right subjects. I look forward to seeing many of them join us in September.
At this time of year, with Remove ruminating on their mock GCSE results and the Upper Sixth in the middle of mock exams, these year groups are increasingly focusing on how to do their very best in the public exams next term; crucial milestones in their educational journeys.
It was another successful weekend for our U18A Cross Country team with a win against Stonyhurst.
It was lovely to host so many prospective parents and prep school Heads for drinks at the very elegant Corinthia in London on Monday, all eager to learn more about life here in the Valley.
Firstly, I am sure you will join me in offering support and best wishes to the monastic community following the sad news about the death of Fr Jonathan Cotton (H60).
