Year 12 Entry

Each year, around 40 additional students are welcomed into Year 12 to study our Sixth Form A-level programme. Ampleforth College’s excellent teaching, wide range of co-curricular activities, and emphasis on developing well-rounded young people is an attractive offer in preparation for the transition to university.

Registration

Registration must take place before the formal assessment process commences. To register, parents need to complete the registration form and pay a non-refundable registration fee of £100 to secure a place for their child on the list for their year of entry. We recommend this is done by the beginning of Year 11.

We also welcome applicants who apply later on and ask that you contact Admissions to find out about availability of places.

Assessment

At the point of Registration, we will ask to see copies of latest school reports, together with predicted grades at GCSE. In general, we request a minimum of 3 Grade 6s and 2 Grade 5s. To be considered for Sixth Form, students will visit the school and have an interview with our Registrar. The interview can be arranged virtually if visiting the school in person is not possible.

Offers of a Place

Most offers will be made in December of Year 11. Offers are subject to the required grades at GCSE and a satisfactory Head’s reference. Upon acceptance of a place, a confirmation fee is payable.

Accepting a Place

Parents are asked to complete and sign a confirmation form and pay a confirmation deposit. This is refunded at the end of your child’s time at Ampleforth College.

When confirming your child’s place, you will also be asked to make your House selection. Making this choice can feel like a daunting task, but we will guide you throughout this process. Your visits to the College will hopefully have given you a steer and a feel for the most appropriate house for your child. Our House pages on the website are also a useful guide and reminder. Families often return for multiple visits before making their final choice of House, and we welcome all such visits.

Options Fair & Taster Lessons

In November of Year 11 we hold a Sixth Form Information Morning for applicants and their parents. This includes an Options Fair which is an excellent opportunity to meet our A Level and BTEC curriculum subject leads and helps when short-listing potential subject choices. This year's Options Fair will be held on 8th November 2025; please get in touch to reserve your place.

In March of Year 11 we invite applicants back to join taster lessons in shortlisted subjects. These lessons help in making final choices, and also provide an opportunity to meet current students and other new starters. We also offer an overnight stay in a boarding house the night before to experience life at Ampleforth and to help start forming friendships.
