Randag Fellows
The Randag Trust was established by Adrian Randag (A54), whose childhood was shaped by his large, close-knit family, a deep love of the outdoors, and the transformative education he received at Ampleforth. Adrian grew up without luxury, but with great independence, responsibility, and encouragement to pursue his own interests. His parents made profound sacrifices to send their children to Ampleforth, believing wholeheartedly in the value of a Catholic education rooted in character, leadership, and service.
Adrian created the Randag Trust to open similar opportunities to families who share these values and circumstances. The Trust provides bursaries, typically around 50% of school fees, for Catholic children who are good all-rounders, show natural leadership, and come from larger families for whom an independent education would otherwise be beyond reach. The Trust was endowed in perpetuity following Adrian’s death in 2020.
Pupils supported by the Trust become Randag Fellows, joining a small community of young people encouraged to flourish at school and to support one another. Each term, the school sends the Fellows’ school reports to the Randag Trustees to keep abreast of their progress. The Randag Fellows are invited to an annual lunch where they spend time with the Trustees and talk about their life at school. Equipped with the values and qualities that an Ampleforth education provides, Randag Fellows are inspired to continue to serve and give back to the wider community after school, reflecting the support they received as part of Adrian Randag’s legacy.
Application criteria
In order to apply for a Randag Fellowship, families should:
- be Catholic
- have more than one child
- be applying for entry into Year 7 or Year 9
- live in the UK
The Randag Trust looks for excellent all-rounder applicants who show leadership potential. Being awarded a scholarship to Ampleforth is not required, but can support a Randag application. Once awarded, a Randag Fellowship continues throughout a child’s time at the College, subject to annual means testing.
Application process
Families eligible to apply for a Randag Fellowship should follow the Ampleforth admissions process for their child, details of which can be found here. In addition, families must complete an online bursary application. This requires details of all income and outgoings, including assets and liabilities as bursaries are means-tested.
The Finance Department at Ampleforth assesses the application initially. If the family meets the criteria for a Randag Fellowship, the application will be passed onto a specialist firm, Bursary Administration Limited (BAL), who undertake an independent assessment. This is likely to include a home visit.
The Head of Admissions produces a profile of the child based on their current school reports and other information received as part of the school application process. This profile is shared with the Randag Trustees, along with BAL's assessment. The Randag Trustees then meet to review all the applications.
