Founded in 1802 and set in a beautiful Yorkshire valley, Ampleforth College is the world’s foremost Catholic boarding school, welcoming girls and boys of all faiths aged 11-18. Each student’s unique talents are recognised and nurtured within a welcoming community rooted in Benedictine values. At its foundation, the basic mission of a Catholic School is to invite young people into a transforming encounter with Christ through the life of the Christian Community.  This gift is realised in Catholic Education as a place where children grow in:

  • self-knowledge
  • self-acceptance
  • self-gift

We have an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified and enthusiastic Teacher of Chemistry to join our high-performing Science department.  The appointed person will help the department in developing among our students a lifelong enjoyment and enthusiasm for science, and to continue the work of inspiring our pupils with an interest and wonder in the visible and invisible worlds around us.

Science is taught at Ampleforth in the modern, purpose-built facilities of the Bamford Centre.

QUICK FACTS:

  • 11 teaching laboratories with each Science having its own dedicated laboratories
  • State of the art facilities and technical equipment in all labs allowing delivery of high-quality Science education to all
  • Extensive practical equipment resources ensure that all students can work independently on A level CPAC practicals
  • A dedicated Science Computer Suite
  • A large central preparation room with three full time laboratory technicians, each a specialist in a separate Science
  • A dedicated staff office and workroom with computers and a resource library
  • All pupils study Biology, Chemistry and Physics as separate subjects in years 7 through to 11.

At GCSE, students either choose to study Edexcel IGCSE Science (Double Award) or all three separate Sciences to gain Edexcel IGCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

At A level, students can study AQA Biology, AQA Chemistry and/or AQA Physics.

The Science department operates an open-door policy to students and all are able to access regular teacher support, both in small groups and one to one settings no matter what their ability.

The Sciences are currently taught by subject specialist teachers working within in a close-knit team with a collegiate approach to the teaching of Science. Ideas, resources and experience are openly shared by all, ensuring the best possible provision for every student.

Classroom learning is supported by participation in extra-curricular activities and science Olympiad competitions. Notable recent successes include: students gaining Gold Awards in the Biology Society Intermediate Olympiad; regional winners and national finalists in the Royal Society of Chemistry Schools Analyst Competition, Gold and Silver Awards in the Cambridge University Chemistry C3L6 Competition and Royal Society of Chemistry Olympiad and Diamond Award winning student in the Isaac Physics Senior Physics Challenge as well as award winners in the British Physics Olympiads.

The Science department contributes significantly to Ampleforth’s outreach work with visiting prep schools.

About the school:

Ampleforth is full boarding with students from all over the UK, Europe and the rest of the world. We rejoice in being culturally diverse with many different languages spoken.

Our academic results are impressive and show that every student is inspired to reach their potential. Beyond academic excellence, to ensure they leave school ready for the challenges ahead, our approach is to encourage our students to develop Benedictine Scholarship; that they would become life-long learners, who are reflective and resilient, who demonstrate intellectual curiosity, with an ability to transfer knowledge and skills across different contexts, in a discerning and critically engaging manner, through good academic habits, and a love of reading. We wish for our students to be digitally equipped for the 21st century, but mindful of any associated ethical implications regarding the use of this technology or programs. Finally, we want for our students to always be striving to give of their best.

We offer a Compass for Life, recognising that every person is of equal value and has unique talents. Our duty is to draw out these talents so that each student becomes the very best version of themselves. The principles of Benedictine community living teach us that we are made better through our relationships with others. As individuals thrive, so does the community - and our community is very strong and welcoming. Our students are inspired to become thoughtful, caring and considerate citizens.
